If you are interested in some really cool 3-D modeling of molecular structures, please join us in welcoming Dr. Barry Finzel to campus as part of the
2012-2013 HONORS Lecture Series:
"Playing in the Sand-box of Protein Structure"
this Wednesday, Feb. 27 @ 5:00 p.m. in Science 2190
Over 40 years of research in structural biology has produced a treasure-trove of information about the molecular structure of proteins. Despite their complexity, it is clear that functionally diverse proteins re-use the same stable substructures over and over. An approach to mining the worldwide Protein Data Bank is presented that emphasizes how different protein structures are geometrically alike. It opens the door to a convenient view of every macromolecule structure as just one member of an ensemble of conformations that evolve to have distinctive function.
This lecture is sponsored by the Honors Program and made possible thanks to the generous support of the Dean's Office.
Hope to see you there!
