Teach, research, serve: Make a world of difference through
Global Student Teaching at UMM.

UMM's GST program is open to all eligible college and university students.

Student teaching is one of the most significant aspects of teacher education programs. It provides students with an opportunity to understand all dimensions of teaching and to begin to apply what they have learned. All participants in the student teaching program play an important role in providing the context in which a student can demonstrate his or her ability to assume the responsibilities of a full-time teacher. Like many schools, the University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM) expects students to complete their student teaching requirement in an unfamiliar community. Today's schools serve multi-ethnic populations; teachers must be able to work effectively with students from different cultural backgrounds. As the New Zealand Teachers Council puts it: "Teaching is a global profession."

You don't have to stay home to complete your student teaching requirement! For more than 25 years, the Global Student Teaching Program (GST) at UMM has offered students from around the world their choice of outstanding placements with host schools in a wide variety of countries. University course credit is granted upon completion of program requirements.

Through UMM's Global Student Teaching program, you'll have the opportunity to learn first-hand how culture affects teaching and learning. Your experiences in the field will provide valuable insight into how curriculum and instructional practices are influenced by history, religion, and social norms.

You'll also discover that educational dilemmas are not limited to any one continent, nation, or local context...and that you can make a difference. Come, be a teacher and researcher, contributing to the field of education. Gain leadership and collaboration skills, meet required standards of effective practice, and grow as an education professional through GST at UMM.

Sound interesting? Then click here to e-mail Professor Pam Solvie, interim director of GST and ELTAP at UMM. She'll be happy to provide more information. After all, you're not just tomorrow's teacher, you're tomorrow's global citizen.

Please note: During the student teaching experience at global sites, preservice teachers meet program requirements and complete any assignments that are required by their home institutions. Successful completion of Global Student Teaching at UMM leads to recommendation for teacher licensure through students' home institutions.
