Global Student Teaching Program

You don't have to stay home to complete your student teaching requirement! Since 1990, the Global Student Teaching Program (GST) at the University of Minnesota, Morris has offered teacher education students outstanding placements with schools in a wide variety of countries.

Student teaching is one of the most significant aspects of a teacher education program. It provides students with an opportunity to understand all dimensions of teaching and to begin applying what they have learned. Today's schools serve increasingly diverse and multi-ethnic populations; teachers must be able to work effectively with students from all different cultural backgrounds.

Through Morris's Global Student Teaching program, teacher candidates have the opportunity to learn first-hand how culture affects teaching and learning. Your experiences in the field will provide valuable insight into how curriculum and instructional practices are influenced by history, culture, religion, and social norms. Through immersion in a different culture, teacher candidates simultaneously learn about the host culture as well as more about their own.

You will also discover that educational dilemmas are not limited to any one continent, nation, or local context. Teacher candidates gain leadership and collaboration skills and grow as education professionals through GST. Successful completion of the program leads to recommendation for teacher licensure through students’ home institutions.
