Important information for GST and ELTAP participants
Medical Coverage
The University requires that you retain U.S. health insurance, including hospitalization coverage, while abroad. CISI coverage
begins only when you leave the U.S. and ends upon your return to the U.S. Your U.S. health insurance will cover you both before you leave, and
after you return from your program. Should you have an accident or illness overseas that requires long-term care once you return, U.S.
health insurance will provide coverage for these expenses.
If you have U.S. insurance coverage through your parents' employment, be sure to talk to them to assure continued
coverage.
University of Minnesota students who enrolled in the University's health plan (Student Health Benefits) for the
semester prior to their term overseas will automatically be enrolled for their time abroad. You will receive an email when the enrollment is
complete and should contact the Student Health Benefits Office (SHBO) with any questions at (612) 624-0627 or 1-800-232-9017 or via
email at umshbo@umn.edu. If you have not purchased the insurance during the terms prior to your
learning abroad program, you may be eligible to purchase the coverage for your term abroad. Check with the SHBO if you have any
questions.
If you want to enroll in the University of Minnesota medical insurance plan for the semester you are abroad for GST or ELTAP,
complete the enrollment form. Submit the completed form with
your other GST/ELTAP application materials by the application deadline.
