FALL NATS NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER, 2003
THANKS FROM YOUR AUDITION CHAIR
Congratulations to all the participants in the 2003 Minnesota NATS Auditions!
It is always exciting to watch our two-day event unfold and enjoy all the preparation and energy of the students, pianists, and adjudicators. As your Audition Chair, I was especially pleased to see how smoothly the events progressed, and I know that this is due to many factors, including organized pianists, prepared students, and thoughtful and responsible adjudicators. I want to offer a very special thank you to some of the folks whose work behind the scenes made this year's Audition event a big success: Axel Theimer, Rebecca Sonmor, Alison Feldt, Anne Adams Schnauber, Carolyn Finley, Scott Blankenbaker, Barbara Prince, Robin Heggen, Marcie Hagen, Cheryl Oie, Pat Kent, and Monica Murray. Also, many thanks to those who jumped it with extra judging and work assignments. I really appreciate your help on such short notice! As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions for 2004 Fall Auditions! Please be in contact with me also if you would like to be involved in planning next year's Auditions.

NEW MN-NATS MEMBERS
MN-NATS began a new mentorship program this fall to assist relatively new voice teachers in their teaching careers by pairing them with a NATS member who teaches in a similar venue and has had a number of years of teaching experience. We encourage you to consider applying to be a part of this program. For this year only we have eliminated the application deadline. To find out more about the program or to get a copy of the application form, go to the MN-NATS website: http://nats.org/minnesota or contact Janet Ahern ( ahernjt@morris.umn.edu ) or 320-589-2474 .
CALL FOR MENTORS
Your MN-NATS Mentorship Committee requests your help. We are looking for voice teachers who have been active NATS members with a minimum of ten years of teaching experience to be willing to serve as mentors in our new mentorship program. We need both private studio and academic teachers. You can access information on the Mentorship Program at our state website: http://nats.org/minnesota . Please contact Janet Ahern ( ahernjt@morris.umn.edu ) or 320-589-2474 if you are interested.

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS: From the studio of Nancy Lee Sherden
30 students ranging in age from 12 to 60+ make up my private studio. The young people hope to be in the musical or pop-choir; there is the Unitarian, the Jewish, the Roman Catholic nun and other Catholics who lead singing, the contemporary Christian praise band members, the basic Protestants and the most conservative Baptists all involved in their respective houses of worship. And the man who wants to sing and play in local folk song venues, the high school boy crazy about the Beatles, the church music director and the wonderfully gifted woman who has done two formal recitals and can hardly wait to retire in two years to devote herself to her Gift and those who study just because they love to sing. Especially rewarding is working with a young woman who had an auto accident a few years ago that left her with right side damage and short-term memory loss. Her long-term memory from performing days is wonderful. We work to get those lips together on m's, p's and b's and general articulation.
All of this makes for an interesting week as I am challenged to meet each person's vocal needs, bearing in mind the wise counsel of my friend and mentor, Leon Thurman, who told me over 25 years ago that our job is not to judge what they sing, but to help them sing healthily and efficiently, and to find their inherent free and natural voice.
