The first program strength in this area is that our candidates have a firm grounding in the liberal arts. Candidates take courses in many disciplines across campus, and they do well. The content requirements both for elementary and secondary candidates are rigorous and explicitly linked to subject matter standards. We have worked to increase and clarify pedagogical content knowledge as well. Secondary education candidates now must prepare and teach a lesson in each area of their subject. In social studies, for example, they teach lessons in history, economics, geography, and other subject areas. Elementary candidates plan and teach lessons and units in all key content areas.
A second program strength is our improved Analysis of Student Learning assignment. We have worked to clarify our expectations, improve the timing and feedback, and further assist our candidates in working effectively with student data to improve instruction.
