Sample Suspension Letter

To: Suspended Student

From: The Scholastic Committee

Due to low scholarship, you have been suspended. Good standing at UMM requires students to maintain an overall GPA of 2.00. Your GPA for the last two semesters was below 2.00 and your cumulative GPA is below 2.00. Your registration for next semester has been administratively canceled. As of this date you are not eligible for financial aid; this applies to UMM summer session classes as well regular semesters as long as you are suspended.

Once you are suspended, you have three options:

1. Complete I, K, or X grades prior to the beginning of classes next term. This may result in the immediate lifting of your suspension. To be reinstated, all grade changes must be received in the Registrar's Office prior to the beginning of next semester. If you are expecting a grade change, periodically check your on-line transcript and notify the Scholastic Committee when the change has been posted: scholcom@lists.umn.edu .

2. You may appeal to return after an absence of one regular academic semester. Appeals to return in spring 2011 must be submitted by July 1, 2010; decisions and notification will be made by the end of July. Download the Suspension Appeal Form at http://www.morris.umn.edu/Scholastic/AcademicProgress/ , complete it electronically, and submit it as an attachment via email to scholcom@lists.umn.edu ; or via FAX to 320-589-6025; or via U.S. mail to the address on the form.

The review committee bases its decision on 1) the reason for your poor performance, and 2) your plan to improve your performance. Verification from a professional is required for medical or personal circumstances. If you wish the Counseling Office, Academic Assistance or Disability Services to provide input on your appeal, they must have written approval (with your signature) prior to the hearing of the appeal. Without this approval, their input cannot be considered.

3 . If you do not appeal, suspension is for one full academic year and you must apply for readmission. If you wish to be readmitted to UMM, you will need to:

  • Show evidence of academic success at the college level. Take courses at another college and earn grades of C or better, completing all courses. If you choose to take summer courses through Continuing Education at UMM, be aware that federal financial aid is not available while you are suspended.
  • Have a plan to manage the social, academic, and financial pressures you face as a college student. Be specific.

It is possible that you will receive a separate notice from the Financial Aid Office concerning your eligibility for financial aid. If you have questions contact http://www.morris.umn.edu/financialaid/.

If you have questions or concerns about the information above, please contact either Dorothy De Jager (320/589-6011) dejagerd@morris.umn.edu.
