Exemptions
Students may be exempt from certain general education requirements based on previous education or experience.
First Year Seminar: the goals of this requirement are designed to be met by students with no previous experience as a full-time, regular student. Consequently, transfer students who have earned 12 credits or more after high school graduation are exempt from the FYS requirement.
College Writing: students with an ACT-English score of 27 or higher are exempt from the College Writing general education requirement.
Foreign Language: students who took a French, German, or Spanish in high school must take the UMM placement test to determine their level of proficiency. Scores on the placement test that designate placement beyond the second semester of the first year qualify the student for exemption from the Foreign Language general education requirement. N0n-native speakers of English may receive a waiver of the Foreign Language requirement. International students may receive a waiver of the International Perspectives requirement in the Global Village.
