Begin your research
In addition to funding, there are many resources available for the student considering research or creative activity at
UMM.
Someone to ask
Intrigued by the idea of undergraduate research but not quite sure what it's all about? Want to know more abou how it works or what projects are currently
underway?
The URS chair, often a winner of the all-University Horace T. Morse Award for
Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education, will be pleased to answer any questions you may have about undergraduate research at UMM.
Your academic adviser will also be happy to discuss research or creative activity options with you.
Research QuickStart
The Research QuickStart, maintained by the UMM Briggs Library web site, will help you find books,
websites, indexes, and other sources for your
investigation or activity.

Center for Small Towns (applied research and scholarship)
The Center for Small Towns is an outreach program housed at UMM that serves small towns, local
units of government, K-12 schools, non-profit organizations, and others who wish to make use of University resources as they address rural issues and
challenges. Students participate in internships and service learning projects, assisting citizens with a wide range of tasks including surveys, data
analysis, and asset mapping in areas such as renewable energy, access to healthcare, infrastructure, and civic involvement. Here are some recent examples of projects in which students have
participated.
National Science Foundation REU Program (Research Experience for Undergraduates)
The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU program. UMM students may visit an REU site institution for several weeks, often
during the summer, to participate in research working closely with faculty or other investigators. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases,
assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.
Council on Undergraduate Research
The website of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR), a non-profit educational
organization, has
valuable information for students and faculty about programs and other resources it offers in support of high-quality undergraduate student-faculty
collaborative research and scholarship. UMM is a member of the Council on Undergraduate Research, which may entitle students to discounts when attending CUR
conferences.
