The General Education Requirements (GER)

The general education categories listed in the degree requirement section of the Catalog are met by taking courses that have been designated to meet them. See the full list by category in the introductory section of the Class Schedule; see an alphabetical list following this page. The 60 credit total may also include other UMM undesignated general education courses.

Most UMM courses count in general education. The following do not:

Accounting courses in Mgmt
ElEd courses (except for 4201 and 4204, which carry category designations)
SeEd courses (except for 4201 and 4204, which carry category designations)
WSS courses except those listed with a category designation

Courses in the discipline of the major may fulfill general education categories. However, the student must earn 60 general education credits outside the discipline of the major.

The Major
Requirements in the major are found in the Catalog in the introductory section of each discipline.

The major may require no more than 40 credits in a discipline, but students are allowed to earn 48 credits in that discipline.

Courses in the discipline of the major may fulfill general education categories as well as major requirements. However, the credits count in the tally of credits in the major.

Here's an example. A student majoring in music can use Mus 3102, Classical, Romantic, and 20th-Century Music to fulfill the Fine Arts (FA) requirement and to fulfill one of the requirements in the major, but the 4 credits earned will count only in the major. If the major is Music, all credits earned in courses designated Mus are excluded from the 60 credits required in general education.

Electives
Students must earn 120 credits. Since the majors vary from 40-48 credits, the number of elective credits varies from 12-20. The 12-20 elective credits may be filled by any UMM courses except courses in the discipline of the major.
