Transfer Students

This page covers characteristics of transfer students, special application procedures for Education Majors , tips to understand how credit transfer works and general considerations for transfer students .

Characteristics of Transfer Students

  • Students transfer to UMM for many reasons, including interesting academic programs, a change in major, study abroad opportunities or even dissatisfaction with prior college experiences. Whatever your reason, carefully consider all of the factors and options when making your decision to transfer.
  • Students transfer to UMM from a wide variety of two and four-year colleges across the country.
  • Successful transfer students plan ahead. Asking questions about your intended major such as if there are special application procedures or when it is best begun, will help you plan and use your time at UMM most efficiently.

Special application procedures for Education Majors

Transfer students need to be aware that Elementary Education major and Secondary Education (licensure only) are the only academic programs at UMM that require separate admission to the major.

Elementary Education students apply to the program in the Spring semester of the sophomore year, and those admitted students then begin the program in the Fall semester. Admission to the program is competitive. Transfer students are encouraged to work closely with the Elementary Education faculty prior to application to make sure they meet admission criteria, application deadlines and have taken the pre-requisite courses. The Elementary Education major takes two years to complete. Students should contact the Division of Education, 200 Education Bldg., 320-589-6400 for details.

Students interested in Secondary Education licensure apply during the spring semester of the junior or senior year. The Secondary sequence begins in fall. Note the requirements for admission in the UMM catalog.

Understand How Transfer Credit Works

  • UMM provides all transfer students with a preliminary evaluation of their transfer credits. You may request this information before you apply; otherwise, it will automatically be sent to you after you have applied for admission to the University.
The preliminary course evaluation will show how your credits fit into UMM's General Education requirements.
  • Students must work with the faculty in their major discipline to determine how their credits apply toward major requirements. Course syllabi are often required by faculty to make this decision. Plan ahead and gather this information before the meeting.
  • It is essential that students meet with faculty in their major discipline upon arrival at UMM. Determinations on transfer credit placement into the major must be made early to avoid delays in progress toward graduation.
  • Completion of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum satisfies all UMM General Education requirements except the Foreign Language requirement (one year college level).

General Considerations for Transfer Students

  • UMM provides an array of student services to support your academic progress. Tutoring, personal counseling, library and computing support are free to all students.
