Area
of Concentration (self-designed major)
Requirements for the bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree from UMM consist of two parts: general education and the major. Students complete a major by fulfilling the requirements as specified in the UMM Catalog.
Instead of a standard major offered here at UMM, students may choose to complete an area of concentration. This is an individualized, often interdisciplinary program consisting of a group of courses that meet the requirements of in-depth study in a specific field of knowledge.
Students who wish to complete an area of concentration must have the program approved by the appropriate faculty advisers, division chairs, and the vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean. A copy of the approved program must be filed with the Registrar's Office.
Several sample programs listed below are available for students to use as templates. These samples can be used as prepared or students can work with a faculty member to customize the program or create a completely new program. A worksheet must be completed and attached to the approval form.
