Objectives

Anthropology courses are designed to provide an understanding of human beings and human society with respect to both biology and culture. Students are exposed to a broad historical and comparative framework within which to view the variety of human cultures. Coursework deals with concepts, techniques, and substantive knowledge of the branches of the field, e.g., physical anthropology, social and cultural anthropology, ethnology, archaeology, linguistics, and applied anthropology.

Requirements for the Anthropology Major

A major in Anthropology was approved in January 2002

The anthropology major requires a minimum of 36 credits in anthropology and sociology.

    Students should choose a faculty adviser as early as possible after declaring the major in anthropology. Up to 4 credits of coursework with a grade of D may be used to meet the major requirements if offset by a sufficient number of higher grades to meet the minimum requirement of a cumulative GPA of C+ in all courses included in the major.

    Requirements for the Anthropology Minor

    A minimum of 24 credits in anthropology and sociology, including:

    • Anth 1111—Introductory Cultural Anthropology

    • Anth 2101—Physical Anthropology

    • Anth 2103--Archaeology
    • Anth 3411—Seminar in Anthropological Methodology

    An additional 8 credits of electives in Anthropology and Sociology courses, 4 of which must be in courses 2xxx or above.    No more than 4 credits can be from Sociology courses

     Teacher Preparation Requirements

    Students seeking teaching licensure in social studies 5-12 should refer to the Education, Secondary (SeEd) guidelines.

    Anthropology students interested in graduate studies in anthropology are encouraged to consult the AAA Guide to Departments in the Anthropology Lab (IH 3). This volume gives information on all U.S. Anthropology Departments (students, faculty, requirements, support, special facilities, etc.)
