Sculpture

The Sculpture studio is outfitted with tools and equipment for working with wood, metal, plaster, clay, and mixed media. The facility includes two separate spaces that accommodate tabletop and large-scale work, a tool room, metal fabricating and welding area, woodworking area, and overhead crane.

Students are encouraged to work cross-disciplinary with other media such as ceramics, book arts, and painting. The sculpture faculty are active professional artists representing a breadth of working methodologies ranging from traditional to conceptual.

Keeping class sizes small allows sculpture students to have their own designated work area in the studio, and develop a one-on-one rapport with faculty. Students often take advantage of UMM’s spacious campus grounds by working outdoors in the fall and spring. Student works can be built and displayed in a multitude of locations across campus.

For the past ten years students and alumni work together during an iron pour that occurs in a neighboring town of Herman, MN. Organized by local artists and arts enthusiasts, and in part by founding member, Professor Jennifred Nellis, this community event takes place on the grounds of a preserve that also functions as a burgeoning sculpture park.
