Art History Capstone
During the semester in which an art history major completes the program, he or she will be required to enroll in the 1 credit Assessment of Student Experience in Art History, ArtH 4901.
Art history is a synthetic discipline in which students learn to approach a wide variety of aesthetic and cultural issues with different methods and from multiple points of view. The purpose of requiring this assessment is two-fold:
• to allow students majoring in art history to reflect on the connections among the different courses and experiences they have had;
• to enable the art history faculty to evaluate the major on a regular basis.
Each major enrolling in ArtH 4901 will be required to do the following:
1. collect as complete a portfolio as possible of the syllabi, papers, exams, journals, projects, etc., from courses they took to complete the major;
2. write a 3 – 5 page paper reflecting on their academic experiences as an art history major;
3. meet together with the faculty and all other students concurrently enrolled in ArtH 4901 to discuss their papers and portfolios.
Each student will be required to meet in a timely fashion with a member of the art history faculty during their final semester to discuss preparation of the portfolio and paper. They will be required to submit a draft of the paper to a faculty member at least three weeks before the group discussion. The final version of the paper and the the portfolio will be due at least one week before the discussion.
