UMM Greenhouses and Conservatory
Label System Information

In the past it was difficult for classes to utilize the resources contained in the greenhouses and conservatory due to the inconsistency of information on the plant labels and the inconsistency of the labels in general.
To be able to better utilize the resourses in the collection, a MAP (Morris Academic Partnership) Project to label the plants in the collection was begun. The goals of the MAP Project, begun by Margaret Kuchenreuther and Beverly Knierim, were to correctly label the plants in a consistent manner, compile the plants into a database, and create this website so the resources would be available not only to the UMM Community, but to anyone visiting the UMM Website.
The labels given to the plants are color coded according to the continent of origin of the plant and contain the plant's family name, scientific name, common name (if it is known), and the plant's origin. The labels are printed on a plastic tape that is adhered to a metal label to try to make the labels more permanent and water resistent. For more information on the labels contact Margaret Kuchenreuther or Beverly Knierim. Keys to the labels are posted outside the greenhouses and conservatory. Click to see a sample Label Key. The information on the labels was entered into a database to keep track of the collection and to create the on-line database.
