Computer Science Discipline: Welcome!

Welcome to the discipline of Computer Science at the University of Minnesota Morris!

A little bit about us.
UMM's Computer Science program combines a strong theoretical basis with extensive hands-on experience to develop long-term concepts and skills, preparing you for a field that changes everyday. Students focus on the core of computer science such as algorithm development, software design, and hardware principles. In the third and fourth years, you can select from a variety of topics courses, many of which grow out of student suggestions. You will also have numerous opportunities for internships, study abroad experiences, and research projects with faculty, many of which are funded through the University-wide Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and local Morris Academic Partnership (MAP) program.

You can get to know other students through our very active Computer Science Club and student ACM chapter. We organize events like guest speakers and field trips to conferences and businesses as well as social events like gaming parties and movie nights. We also host an annual programming contest with participants from UMM and throughout the region.

Many Computer Science UMM graduates are employed at a variety of companies including IBM, Alliance Technical Systems, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, US Bank, Anderson Consulting, the Mayo Clinic, Secure Computing, and West Publishing. Students often acquire these jobs through summer internships and through our network of very active alumni. About a third of our graduates continue their education pursuing graduate degrees. Recently our graduates have gone on to Ph.D. programs at well-known universities that are renowned for their Computer Science research, such as Carnegie Mellon, University of Massachusetts - Amherst, Brown University, Georgia Tech, University of California at San Diego, University of Colorado.
