The Teacher Education Committee reports to the Curriculum Committee. The membership includes four faculty members, with representation from each division, two students, and the chair of the Division of Education, who serves ex officio and without vote.

The duties and responsibilities of the Teacher Education Committee include the review of teacher education programs and policies. The Division of Education consults with the Teacher Education Committee as a means of assisting teacher education in its task of keeping programs current with respect to the needs of elementary and secondary students and licensure requirements.

During the 2004-05 year the following topics were discussed.

•  Purpose of the Teacher Education Committee
•  Education Catalog Changes
•  Teacher Education Program
•  Dispositions of teacher candidates
•  Student Athletes and Teacher Education
•  Status of Teacher Education in Minnesota
•  National Education
•  E-Folio and electronic portfolio in teacher education
•  National Center for Education Statistics
•  Curriculum Standards – National Standards
•  National and State Exams

Teacher education crosses many disciplines at UMM and fostering interaction with other divisions and disciplines enhances the teacher education program. The Minnesota Board of Teaching and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education requires teacher education programs to be fully integrated into the liberal arts. The Teacher Education Committee assists in this integration and enables UMM to remain in good standing for state and national accreditation.

Recommendation:
Members of the Teacher Education Committee recommend continuation of this committee.
