Membership
The Teacher Education Committee consists of seven members, including four faculty members, with representation from each division, two students, and the chair of the Division of Education or representative, who serves ex officio and without vote.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Teacher Education Committee reviews the teacher education programs. The Division of Education consults with the Teacher Education Committee as a means of assisting that division in its task of keeping programs current with respect to the needs of elementary and secondary students and licensure requirements.
- Tom reviewed the history of this committee and there was a recommendation to discontinue this committee. The Curriculum Committee did not accept this recommendation.
- We can decide what initiatives we would like to undertake this year with two meetings this fall and two in the spring.
Overview of UMM Education Programs
- Gwen briefly described our three disciplines: Education, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education and more information can be found at the following Web site: www.morris.umn.edu/academic/education
- ElEd is a major on this campus, students also work towards licensure with K-6 and a specialty license (preprimary or middle level – communication arts & literature, math, science, social science, and world languages)
- SeEd is not a major but a licensure program, students complete a major and then they take the required education courses and license area requirements
- Both Elementary and Secondary programs have a separate admissions process with ElEd applying during the sophomore year and SeEd either apply during their 3rd or 4th year
- Approximately 20% of each graduating class is Education
- Check out our Web site has we have links to Teacher Education Committee and Teacher Education Advisory Council or just to learn more about our programs
- Gwen shared Teacher Education’s Goal: we need better facilities, we are not handicap accessible, ElEd teaches in MRC 205 which is also not handicap accessible and we want to get on the list for building improvements
- Teacher Education Advisory Council meets once a year and includes the following individuals: local superintendents, principals, and cooperating teachers that we work with
Teacher Education Accreditation Process
- State Accreditation is through Board of Teaching (BOT) and will be completed in Spring ‘08
- National Accreditation is through National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and will be completed in Fall ‘08
- Michelle Page is the coordinator for PEPER, our state accreditation process, and Gwen is the coordinator for NCATE
- Michelle has already been meeting and working with the different disciplines in which we offer licensure to explain the process and start collecting evidence and determining which courses meet the different required state content standards and the Standards of Effective Practice are met in our Teacher Education courses
- NCATE is an optional accreditation option and is completed every seven years but we have been fully accredited since we began offering teacher education
- Gwen was just in Washington DC for NCATE sessions on upcoming accreditation process
Current Catalog Changes
- Small wording changes, SeEd has created two separate courses from Block I and increased the credits for the practicum
- We have increased the specialty area credits for ElEd to 28 credits as the state will be looking for more required courses than having the student pick their own
- Education changes will be presented to Curriculum Committee next week
Discuss Committee Plans for the Year
- Options for this year include bringing Michelle Page in to talk about our State Accreditation, read an article and have a discussion, attend the Teacher Education Advisory Council meeting
- Jana will collect schedules the end of October to schedule a meeting in early November
- Past History – when UMM switched from quarter to semester we were also undergoing new state standards and NCATE 2000
- Jana will send email with links to organizations that we have discussed
Next Meeting – November 2006
