FDC Minutes of 11/1/06
Bina asked for any corrections, revisions, and/or approval of the FDC minutes, dated 11/1/06. After review of the minutes, motion (Marxen/Borchardt) to approve the minutes; motion was carried.
Teaching of Strategic Languages
Borchardt distributed to committee members an article from the December 8, 2005 University Register regarding the German Major. Borchardt said the article, well written, was objective and told the history of German. Borchardt discussed with the committee her concerns; and asked, "How can you teach a major when only one is teaching?" Discussion followed. Bina commented:
- This is a governance issue, noting that the issues should come to the faculty committees first, than to Assembly.
- Languages are part of globalization
- Clarification of enrollment
Borchardt distributed an article from the American Association of Teachers of German, Inc. (AATG) to members, briefly discussing the President's National Security Language Initiative (NSLI) program.
Bina said for further action on this issue; he requested Borchardt to write a paper and submit it to the FDC to be amended to the minutes; noting this would be a permanent record.
Quality of Life Survey
Sungur, noting this is a rough analysis, reviewed the results of the Quality of Life survey with the committee. Sungur said there was balanced representation from all Divisions and highlighted various areas and the satisfaction rate among faculty. Members discussed possible changes to future surveys, such as,
- including questions specifically related to singles
- include questions relating to residency -Morris or outside of Morris
The FDC will meet on December 13 at 1:00 PM in the Faculty Center .
Motion (Marxen/Borchardt) to adjourn; the meeting adjourned at 2:00 PM.
