Your Institute project
The Collaboration has more than 18 years of experience guiding Institute teams to meet their goals. This experience has shown us that often the most difficult part of this process can be identifying the specific need to address. Is promoting student retention or engaged student learning a priority? What about finding ways to build greater collaboration across areas of your institution—promoting cooperation between academic and student affairs, say, or liberal and professional programs? Perhaps you are looking for new ways to help new or adjunct faculty become successful teachers, bridge generational differences among faculty and staff, or support those involved in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning through peer support. The key in choosing a project is to focus on the need or "problem" you want to address and the outcome you wish to achieve by the week's end. The act of preparing your proposal can help crystallize these ideas. Teams wishing to take part in the 2008 Institute are required to submit a two- to
three-page narrative proposal addressing the following questions:
- What is the specific problem on which your team wants to work? Which and how many students will be affected?
- What are your goals? How will your project strengthen student learning?
- What programmatic, pedagogical, or other approaches do you expect to explore to reach these goals?
- What do you want to accomplish during the Institute to help you reach these goals?
- What preparations will your team undertake before the Institute?
- What specific consulting assistance, activities, or resource materials would be helpful to you at the Institute?
- When and how do you plan to implement your project? How will you disseminate what you have learned from the Institute to other faculty, staff, and students?
- What personal strengths and expertise will your team members contribute to make the Institute productive for other participants?
These questions have been designed to help you prepare a meaningful and realistic project for your team. In addition, your answers will assist The Collaboration in constructing a customized, dynamic experience for you.
After ensuring that we can help you meet your goals and selecting your team to participate, The Collaboration's core faculty will use the accepted proposals to design the Institute to meet the needs of the participating teams. If your team is chosen, we will also provide feedback in advance of the Institute to help make your experience—and your project—successful.

Fall 2008 Conference
"Culture Matters: Designing Learning Environments to
Foster Cultural Awareness and Intercultural Competence."
Call for Proposals Deadline: April 18, 2008
The goal of this conference is to explore the premise that culture, in all of its manifestations, is emerging as a fundamental influence on teaching and learning in the 21st century. Not only must today's students be culturally aware and interculturally competent to be successful, but efforts to strengthen college teaching and learning can be helped or hindered according to whether cultural differences are taken into account. The learning-centered institution is one where reflection on diverse perspectives is embedded in its work - one where culture matters.

PREP
Professional Enhancement Programs
Summer 2008
The Mathematical Association of America's PRofessional Enhancement Program (PREP) provides a range of activities to support growth for mathematicians at all stages of their careers. Whether you are seeking new ideas for research and teaching, development of leadership skills or simply looking for a chance to interact with colleagues on one of the annual MAA Mathematical Study Tours, PREP has a program for you.
The PREP summer workshop series enables faculty in the mathematical sciences to respond to rapid and significant developments that impact undergraduate mathematics. PREP workshops offer extended professional development experiences with active involvement by all participants, leadership by experts, and a commitment by participants to make use of what they learn. PREP workshops serve faculty in the mathematical sciences from all types of institutions, at all stages in their careers, and enable faculty to reach beyond their own educational experiences. To achieve a sustained impact, PREP workshops extend over time with preparatory, intensive and on-going components. Follow-up components are typically held in conjunction with the Joint Mathematics Meetings each January.
