The discipline recognizes that learning geology is often best accomplished in the field. Thus, students will often find themselves in a "natural classroom." Field trips to northern Minnesota, the Black Hills of South Dakota, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and the Baraboo region of Wisconsin are taken in conjunction with regularly scheduled classes. The Florida Keys, Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Big Bend National Park, and Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are typical destinations for spring break or May-term geology trips. The Geology of Italy and Arctic Field Ecology and Geology are two recent summer course offerings that provided students with an international experience. In addition, UMM geology majors have carried out research in Brazil, Sweden, and Canada.
