SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) Field Scholarship Awards
Each year the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) makes several $500 awards to undergraduate students attending summer field camp or other field-based courses. For eligibility guidelines, scholarship information, and the application form, click here. The deadline for applying is February 16, 2007.
American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) National Scholarship Program
The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) awards four scholarships in the amount of $1000 each to assist undergraduate geology majors with college education costs and to promote student participation in the AIPG. Students must be at least a sophomore and must either be a student member of AIPG or must have applied for student membership at the time the application for scholarship is submitted (annual membership is $15). RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) - University of Minnesota
The University of Minnesota's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program offers financial awards twice yearly to full time undergraduates for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member.
The next deadline is March 5, 2007 for projects beginning on or after July 1, 2007.
Keck Geology Consortium - Summer 2007 research opportunities
Keck Consortium undergraduate research projects for Summer 2007 were recently announced and include field locations in Iceland, the Alps, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Students must be rising seniors at the time of summer field work. The deadline for applying is Friday, February 2. For detailed descriptions of projects, click here. Sigma Xi Student Research Grants
Sigma Xi annually awards grants of up to $1000 to support investigation in any field of science and engineering. Undergraduate or graduate students in a degree program are eligible. EMPLOYMENT AND INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Undergraduate Summer Internships - "Fluids, from Surface to Core"
The Dept. of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities hosts a 10-week NSF-funded summer internship for undergraduates. Now in its tenth year, the program has a theme of "Fluids, from Surface to Core". Participants will work with individual faculty members and their research groups and will be actively involved in a wide spectrum of projects ranging from paleoceanography to deep earth geophysics. The program is ideal for students who will be Juniors or Seniors in Fall, 2007 and who are seeking an in depth research experience. The program carries a stipend of $4400, and housing and travel funds are provided. Applications are due by March 5, 2007 . For more information, click here.
Summer Internship, Kenai Watershed Forum, Soldotna, Alaska
The Kenai Watershed Forum is looking for one field-oriented intern to conduct stream surveys along a number of anadromus tributaries to the Kenai River. The goal is documenting impediments to migrating salmon that utilize these streams. The intern will learn to establish water flow gauging stations, identify salmon smolt species, and conduct physical and chemical water quality monitoring. He or she will also be documenting riparian vegetation types and noting changes associated with road crossings that have altered the hydrology of the streams. Positions are expected to consist of approximately 75% fieldwork and 25% data entry/summary reports. Responsibilities include working directly with local geologist, engineers and state biologists on this project.
Applicants should be in good academic standing, enrolled in a hydrology, biology, civil or environmental engineering or related major program. Preference will be given to those who demonstrate a desire to pursue an environmental career.

Summer Student Internships, IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center and EarthScope USArray Facility at New Mexico Tech University
The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Program for Array Seismic Studies of the Continental Lithosphere (PASSCAL) has an opening for a summer student intern. This position is designed for an advanced undergraduate or graduate student with interests in experiment design, field methods, seismograph electronics, and data processing. Research and Discover Undergraduate Summer Internships
These internships involve ground-breaking research conducted jointly at University of New Hampshire and the NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center. Possible projects include investigating the effects of human activities on the Earth; analyzing samples of snow, ice, and the atmosphere to sudy climate and chemical changes; and studying dynamic processes in the Earth system using remote sensing or GIS. Summer Internships in Scientific Drilling
DOSECC (Drilling, Observation and Sampline of the Earth's Continental Crust) invites students to apply for summer internships in scientific drilling. Interns can undertake research related to ongoing or past drilling efforts. Internships are open to college students (graduate and undergraduates) and primary and secondary school teachers. Soudan Underground Mine Internship - MN Department of Natural Resources
Three intern positions are available at Soudan Underground Mine State Park in Soudan, MN, for summer 2007. The term of employment is approximately 5/19-9/3.
Any student fulfilling an academic requirement or receiving academic credit from an accredited educational institution is eligible. The internship must be approved and signed off by a sponsoring academic instructor.

Summer Science Internship - Bruce Museum, Greenwich, Connecticut
The Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, announces a Summer Science Internship position. The intern will assist the Science Curator on projects related to curating a natural history collection. Special consideration will be given to interns majoring in geology or biology since current projects involve our collections of minerals, fossils, birds and mammals. Mineral Analysis Lab Geotechnician - Chevron Energy Technology Company
Perform laboratory work in mineral analysis lab consisting of sample preparation and data collection for X-ray diffraction, infrared and mass spectroscopy. This includes sample grinding, sample treatments, preparation and mounting, data collection and data storage. Geotechnician will also operate a scanning electron microscope in order to obtain geologic sample photomicrographs and write sample descriptions. The City of Ames, IA, is seeking a qualified candidate to administer and develop our Public Works Dept. GIS data related to infrastructure including streets, water mains, sanitary and storm sewers, and traffic. This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Geography, Computer Science, GIS, Engineering, or related technical field with 3 years of related experience with professional knowledge of engineering principles preferred.
