What is a Tutorial?

A tutorial is a culminating historical research project undertaken over the course of two semesters. Students work closely with one or more faculty members to identify and define a topic of interest for the student to explore through independent research. And student and faculty continue to work closely as the project develops and its presentation is prepared.

Required Courses

Students must complete two courses: Hist 4110 Tutorial in History (1 cr) and Hist 4120 Tutorial in History (4 cr repeatable to 10 cr). Credit for Hist 4110 is awarded after the completion of Hist 4120. The courses are completed in successive semesters and students may complete the sequence spring-fall or fall-spring. Please complete and submit the senior tutorial form to your history advisor the semester before you intend to enroll in Hist 4110.

Each faculty member has different areas of interest and expertise. Students should consider these differences in identifying faculty to help them with their tutorial -- but this list of areas is neither exclusive nor exhaustive.
