AANERUD, OSCAR

An 1884 diary of Oscar Aanerud's father, a story called The Country Boy, and a family history comprise this collection.  The diary is translated from Norwegian, and is the story of his father's departure from Oslo, Norway to his arrival in Donnelly, MN.  The story depicts a childhood growing up on a farm in west central Minnesota at the beginning of the 20th century. The family history is a historical account of the Aanerud homestead located in Donnelly, MN.  [1002 SC]

Consists mostly of stories written by Allanson or those he collected from other people.  Most are stories of pioneer life in Minnesota in the late 1800's, especially Traverse County and the town of Wheaton, MN. Collection includes information on a variety of subjects, including:  histories of Big Stone County, Graceville, MN; Ortonville, MN; the Birch Coulie Affair, the Joseph R. Brown family (one of the first settlers in Traverse County), reminiscences of a Traverse County Sheriff from the 1930's, historical sketches of the Sioux Indians, the Sisseton Reservation, early trading use of Lake Traverse, the Long-Keating Expedition (to find the source of the Minnesota River), and a history of the Minnesota Territory.  [278]

This organization was also known as the Morris Study Club.  Information on the economics, rules, by-laws, reports, and correspondence of the association.  Membership enrollment lists and journal reports from meetings document many of the group's functions and activities, such as the book fair, the Edna Murphy Morrison Award, and many other interests related to women, including career opportunities and equal rights.  A limited amount of national information is also included.  [1095]

A Norwegian immigrant discusses his 1911 immigration experiences, which included coming to Minnesota by train and working in lumber camps of northern MN. This tape is part of the Powerline Controversy (1974-1979) series. Anderson, a grain farmer from Litchfield, MN, a member of the board of directors of the Meeker County Cooperative, and the board of directors of the Cooperative Power Association, discusses the cooperative structure from the local level to the generating and transmitting organizations, as well as the Mid-Continent Area Power Pool.  The cost of the powerline project, causes and issues concerning opposition to the line, and Anderson's comments on the role of electricity and the energy situation in Minnesota in the future are also included.  [1056]

Anderson was a farmer from Starbuck, MN and a District 24A Minnesota state representative from 1952-1978.  He chaired the Legislative Building Commission in 1971 and 1973 and also chaired the subcommittee on Parks and the subcommittee on Fair Campaign Practices.  The collection contains numerous legislative publications relating to a variety of issues, including significant amounts of material on higher education and the state parks system.  The collection also contains constituent correspondence and letters about regional concerns.  [313]
 
ANDERSON, EMIL

Anderson lived and farmed in Chippewa County, MN all of his life, and served as County Commissioner from 1941-1965.  He discusses his duties as commissioner, the WPA workers and some of the work they did in Chippewa County, the Depression, and some of the wildlife and conservation efforts of the time.  He also discusses the Olof Swensson family (Olof Swensson Farm Museum of the Chippewa County Historical Society) in detail, including the preachings of Mr. Swensson, their house, and the work done by the women and children in the Swensson family.  A transcript is available.  [1005]

A Minnesota state legislator from the 48th district (near Donnelly, MN), this collection contains Anderson's papers from his two legislative sessions.  Most of the collection is correspondence from people concerned about legislative bills coming before the House of Representatives.  Topics include the contested election by A.F. Rieber, federal rent control, a 50-foot truck length bill, N.S.F. checks, and basic aid increases for schools.  More general topics deal with taxes, school reorganization, drunk driving, swine diseases, legislation on the mentally retarded, censorship of literature, optometry advertising, and finding a replacement for the Minnesota Board of Regents.  This collection is arranged chronologically.  [1026]

This interview is part of the Powerline Controversy (1974-1979) series.  Anderson discusses the structure of the cooperative system, and the Agralite Cooperative in Benson, MN in particular.  He also discusses the planning and need for the powerline, possible alternatives to the line, health and safety issues, and what effects this controversy will have on future lines and power plants.  He also talks about the relationship between the board members and the CU managers and how errors of judgement contributed to the controversy, how more cooperation and public relations work was needed, and how the powerline affected people.  This interview is restricted.  [1056]

The Appleton Civic League was a women's club active in civic improvement projects in Appleton, MN including maintaining a tourist park, sponsoring garbage collection, and sponsoring fund raising drives for charities.  This collection contains the records of the league, including meeting minutes, financial records, correspondence, and newspaper clippings of their activities.  [1177]

The collection contains bid information, invoices and equipment specification dated before the hospital opened in 1952.  Most of the collection contains information after this date, however.  Collection contains financial ledgers, audit reports, board reports, patient service data and reports to the medical staff.  It also contains information on the Appleton Nursing Home, which was added in 1964.  There are some restrictions on access.  [1159]

In the first tape, Austin recounts his family history and their travels to the United States and Montevideo, MN.  He talks about how the people of the area reacted to WWI, the crash of 1929, the Depression, and WWII.  He also discusses changes in Montevideo's atmosphere and city government.  The second tape is about the history of the bands and band instructors in the Montevideo area from the 1920's to the 1970's and Mr. Austin's participation in the Boy Scout band and the city band.  A transcript is available.  [323]
