GAWBOY, ROBERT

Gawboy is an Indian medicine man from the Lake Kabetogama Band of Boise, Forte Bank of the Lake Superior Chippewa.  He lives on the Lake Vermillion Indian Reservation in Tower, MN.  He discusses what it is to be an Indian medicine man and some of the remedies used and spells cast.  He also discusses some Indian legends and traditions.  A transcript is available.  [1010]

These interviews cover many aspects of life in Grant County, MN, including:  the Barret Ice Works Plant, the Dalton Threshing Bee, early schooling in west central Minnesota, diptheria, businesses, immigrating to the area, Indians, the grasshopper plague, the Pomme de Terre Fort and River, the railroad, General Barret, the Depression, the Herman Movie Theatre, the blizzard of 1873, farming, experiences of a rural mail carrier, early fires, the now extinct town of Belview, MN, the contest between Herman and Elbow Lake for the county seat, blacksmiths, and WWI experience of a draftee.  People interviewed include the following:  Sigrud Bartness, Ted Berg, Hugh Block, Emma Brenvold, Olive Briggs, Fred Burns, Charles Christianson, Tena Fjoslien, Mrs. Tosten Hagen, Bill Larson, Orrin Larson, Mrs. Hodgson Nelson, Henry Olson, Alfred Schaeffer, Victor Setterland, George Shervey, Olin Thompson, and Henry Thornberg.  These reminiscences cover the late 1800's and early 1900's.  All transcripts are available.  [319]

Collection consists of school records (treasurer's and clerk's records) for 50 rural school district in Grant County.  The majority of the collection is dated from 1900-1940.  Other records include information on the hot lunch program in districts 3, 5, 33, 34, consolidation materials for districts 5, 33, and 42, school censuses, Minnesota pupil records, and the teachers' reports to superintendents.  [1087]
