Latin American Area Studies A Latin American Area Studies major prepares you with the knowledge and understanding to interact with our Latin American neighbors as culturally informed global citizens. Welcome to the site for Latin American Area Studies, an interdisciplinary program at UMM. Latin American countries have been our allies, our enemies, our trading partners, and our friends. Our history is entangled with the history of the region south of the U.S. border. We influence their culture and they influence ours. The objectives of the Latin American Area Studies program are: To provide a basic introduction to the cultures and societies of Latin America To provide the means essential to gain an understanding of Latin American and its diverse peoples To place Latin America in a comparative perspective.
