Nils Hasselmo, a former professor of Scandinavian languages at the University of Minnesota, has always been a generous supporter of foreign languages. Hasselmo went on to become President of the University of Minnesota and currently serves as President of the Association of American Universities in Washington D.C.

The Hasselmo Language Teaching Center is located in the basement of the Humanities Building. It comprises a computing facility and a Media Screening Room. Both rooms may be reserved for class activities and are available for student use when not reserved for a course. See the LTC Reservation Procedures.

Computing Facility

The LTC computing facility consists of 16 Dell PCs and one Macintosh G4 faculty workstation and can accommodate a class of up to 32 students. In addition to the basic suite of software programs (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, FTP, etc.), offers a variety of foreign language software programs, as well as spell and grammar check in dozens of foreign languages. Students can also use the computers to view a (Region-1) DVD individually, with a headset.

The computing facility offers also computer projection (for presentations) and the capacity to view VHS tapes or Region-1 DVDs as a group.

Media Screening Room

The Media Screening Room includes a big-screen television, a region-free DVD player, a VHS player, PAL player, and laserdisc player.

The Media Room also offers satellite programming in Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian, or can be reserved to watch one of the films from the extensive international film collection in the LTC.

The Media Room can accommodate classes (or groups) of about 15. Larger groups should plan to use the projector in the computing facility. Students can stop in anytime and add their name to the reservation schedule for the week in progress whenever it is not being used for a course.

Students may check out a digital video camera or digital still camera for a class project. Video editing software is available on the computers in the LTC.

The LTC will be closed to individual students on the following dates :

March 13-22

May 11-14
