Department History

The UMM Philosophy department was founded in 1963 by Ted Uehling. Howard Wettstein and Peter French joined the department several years later, and in 1974, the three of them established one of the most highly regarded journals in the world for analytic philosophy: Midwest Studies in Philosophy. In 1978, the Australian philosopher J.L. Mackie served as a visiting professor. Ishtiyaque Haji was a member of our department from 1992 until 2003. The department continues to host the annual Midwest Philosophy Colloquium, which is now in its 33rd year. Colloquium speakers have included Donald Davidson, Saul Kripke, Phillipa Foot, Michael Bratman, Eleanor Stump, Derk Pereboom, Fred Feldman, Gary Watson, Helen Longino, and many others.
