At the Life Center In the Stevens County Medical Center

Thursday December 11, 2008
4:30 – 6:00pm
4oo East 1st Street, Morris, MN

This fall, UMM art students are learning the positive impact art can have on a community and environment, while honing their skills as artists and painters. They produced several landscape paintings for the Life Center at the Stevens County Medical Center, showcasing the beauty of Minnesota’s landscape. To view a slide show of the paintings, please click here

There will be an opening reception to unveil these new paintings to the public at the Life Center from 4:30-6:00 PM on Thursday December 11. Everyone is invited to this exciting event. Refreshments will be provided. The paintings will sure infuse new life and color into the space.

The purpose of this project was to teach students in Michael Eble’s Beginning and Advance Painting I classes to create public art in collaboration with a community partner, while brightening the inside of the Life Center and encouraging visitors to ponder the beauty of the Minnesota landscape. The students also gained an appreciation of the positive effect they can have on a community through their art, and a greater understanding of the Life center and SCMC in Morris.

Seventeen students went to the Morris Wetland Management District in this past Fall and painted a series landscape paintings “en plein air”. En plein air describes the traditional approach to painting outside in the environment of the painting. Through this process students gained a greater appreciation for the Minnesota wetlands and landscape along with gaining a better understanding of the environmental issues that affect these areas.. They also reflected on the impact their paintings will have on the Life Center space. Finally, the finished paintings were hung in the Life center space, with the official opening reception scheduled for Thursday Dec 11th. Artists included in the exhibit:

Bridget Barnes Erica Ostoj
Evan Gragg Zach Ranallo
Jennifer Hagen Gretchen Retka
Angela Laidlaw Cassandra Snyder
Michelle Leedahl Jessica Thielen
Eli Mayfield Christine Toemke
Sarah McDermott James Watkins
Mitch McGuire Samantha Vankrevelen
