BIOL 4004: Principles of Public Health and Epidemiology

ENGL 3032: Creative Nonfiction
Instructor: Argie Manolis

TC: 1 ½ hours each week, starting in week four, or 2 hours for six weeks,
starting in week six, depending on project. Hours will be scheduled around your schedule for work with elders; hours for work with the schools will occur in the 8:30-3:20 time frame.

Project Description: Students can choose from one of the following projects: attend weekly recreational and therapeutic activities for elders to increase the quality of their lives, and write “found poems” from the elders’ words for their families; plan and implement a series of six lesson plans for Morris Elementary School students labeled gifted and talented that teach methods related to creative nonfiction; plan and implement a series of six lesson plans for students labeled learning disabled that teach methods related to creative nonfiction.

SOC 1101: Introductory Sociology

TC: Students who enroll in the service-learning option in this class will be enrolling in a one-credit directed study that connects to the class. Students will spend two hours each week on site and 30 minutes every other week reflecting in small groups.

Partners: The Zone, Morris Area School District’s after school program.
Project Description: Students will work at “The Zone,” an after school program, tutoring students in grades K-12 and assisting with wellness and academic enrichment activities. Students will also meet once every two weeks for 30 minutes to reflect on their work with “The Zone” and complete one additional 3-5 page reflective paper about their experiences.
SOC 3121: Sociology of Gender

Project Description: Students will conduct focus groups with UMM students, faculty, and staff regarding eating habits as part of a umm health assessment.

TC: 2 ½ hours every other week, beginning in week five. We will also meet weekly for one hour for class.
Prerequisites: This directed study is open only to college students who are labeled learning disabled.

Project Description: In this a mentoring program; students will be paired with K-12 students with learning disabled labels. Mentor pairs will meet regularly for guided activities that use art as a method for storytelling and that teach self-advocacy skills.
