Theatre Arts Discipline


Major and Minor Requirements and Explanations

These requirements have been selected by the curriculum Committee and the Theatre Arts Faculty in consultation with Theatre Arts students over the years and have been approved by the Campus Assembly. They may not be deviated from without approval of the Theatre Arts Faculty.

Transfer students should consult with their Theatre Adviser regarding acceptable substitute courses from other institutions.

Semester System Theatre Major Requirements:

ALTERNATE YEAR COURSES: Students are cautioned to consult regularly with their Theatre Adviser and check annual Class Schedules and UMM Bulletins regarding courses offered on alternate years. These are marked with asterisks and parentheses*( )* below.
PREREQUISITE COURSES: Many courses above TH 1101 have prerequisites. Students should note these and satisfy the prerequisites prior to enrolling in these courses. Instructors of these courses assume a certain amount of carryover knowledge from the prerequ isite courses.
"D"GRADES: Four credits of coursework with the grade of D are allowed to meet the major requirements if offset by an equivalent number of credits of A or B.

The Senior Project is a project in which the student demonstrates certain proficiencies, knowledge, and expertise in a particular area of Theatre Arts. Such projects are initiated by the student in consultation with the Theatre Faculty Adviser and in the past have taken the form of practical or hypothetical designs (scenery, costume, lighting), acting recitals, theatre management projects, and play direction.

Students should have their Senior Project proposals submitted to the Faculty by Spring of the year prior to graduation in order to allow sufficient time for approval, scheduling, and completion.

Students wishing to complete a Senior Project in stage direction should also consult the Theatre Arts policy on student play direction in this handbook.

_____TH 3201 ADVANCED ACTING
_____TH 3202 ADVANCED DIRECTING
_____TH 3301 STAGE LIGHTING
_____TH 3302 STAGE COSTUMING
_____TH 3303 COMPUTER ASSISTED DRAWING
_____TH 4301 SCENE DESIGN

______Six major production responsibilities (four of which must be in a faculty-directed production, all others must be pre-approved by faculty, and three must be in the junior and senior years). These major production responsibilities are arranged through consultation with your Theatre Adviser. They must be major production responsibilities such as being in the cast of a production, working on a production crew, design responsibilities, etc. Activities such as ushering, ticket sales, etc. do not qualify.

_____Third-Year Portfolio Review.

_____At least one para-programmatic theatre experience that is arranged through a theatre arts faculty member and may take any number of forms, e.g., internship with a theatre company, study abroad, or theatre tour to New York (TH 1040) or London (TH 1050).
