"What's in a name? Basic to the development of modern theatre practices are the concepts that each production gains an artistic unity under the direction of a single person and that 'there are no small roles, only small actors.' Implied in these concepts is the idea that theatre, good theatre, involves individuality combined with a cooperative spirit dedicated to the production of theatre of worth. Early advocates of this 'system' of theatre were such illustrious men as Wagner, Appia, Stanislavski, and all the great names connected with the Independent Theatre Movement. The earliest successful theatre company to demonstrate the value of this 'ensemble' approach to play production was sponsored by Georg, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen. The 'Meiningen Players' toured Europe and were a source of inspiration to all who saw them. It is from this famous company that we have taken the name of our student drama organization."
Janet Lawler, President 1963
The purpose of Meiningens Student Theatre is to promote and produce the theatre arts on the University of Minnesota, Morris campus and the area which it serves, and to cultivate social relationships among its members. The Meiningens support the theatre program in a number of ways. Among these are by providing box office and ushering personnel and assisting with various other promotional and production tasks. In addition, the organization sponsors social and cultural events such as trips to the Guthrie Theatre, student theatre productions, and the annual theatre awards banquet. Membership is open to any student with an interest in theatre.
