Objectives of the Class
1. To develop an appreciation for the art and craft of stage costuming.
2. To develop the ability to recognize costumes by their period.
3. To develop the skills necessary to design, construct,
and maintain
costumes for the stage.
4. To develop computer drawing skills in the area of costume design.
Class Projects
1. Research sketches will be due on each Thursday. There will be a severe penalty for late sketches, see below. (There will be no penalty for sketches turned in early.) Expect no exceptions to this rule. These projects will be full color renderings. Fabric swatches are encouraged but not required. There will be one male and one female figure in each set of renderings. They must be at least 10 inches tall, in poses appropriate to the design and the period. All renderings will be annotated. You must present at least 5 costume designs rendered using a computer drawing program.
The research sketches will be worth 35% of your final grade.
2. Final costume design project will be due on Wednesday, 8 May. This project will
consist of a complete set of costume plates (including fabric swatches and pattern sketches). I will select the play. This project will be worth 10% of your final grade.
3. Each class member will construct and model one costume. Due date will be announced. This costume will be made during class time. More details on this assignment later. This project will be worth 10% of your final grade.
4. Each class member will keep a notebook on period costumes. This notebook will be compiled from research and class presentations. The notebook will be graded at midterm and at the end of the quarter. (The notebook will be worth 5% of your final grade.)
5. Each class member will make at least two period class presentations. These
presentations will be worth 5% of your final grade.
6. There will be four examinations. These exams will cover the text readings and test your memory and recognition of each of the major periods of Western costume. (Each exam will be worth 5% of your final grade. Together they will amount to 20% of your grade.)
7. There will be assorted classroom projects and costume work during class time. Additionally, you must work in the costume shop 3 hours per week. These hours must be arranged with the costume shop. This participation will be worth 15% of your final grade.
Grading
Research Sketches 35%
Examinations 20%
Participation 15%
Final Design Project 10%
Costume Construction 10%
Notebook 5%
Period Presentations 5%
Note: If you are taking this course for S-N grading, your final grade must equal at least a "C" to receive credit. I do not grade using plus or minus grades.
Late Penalty
All work in the theatre must be finished by a deadline. Creative work in the theatre must depend on the resources that are available to you. So it is in this class. Missing a deadline for any of the projects or exams listed above will result in a reduction of your project or exam grade by 40%. This includes the weekly renderings. Plan your workloads accordingly.
