GENERAL INFORMATION
1. The objective of this class will be to teach the student a systematic approach to painting theatrical scenery. The class will cover traditional scene painting techniques and the tools and paints that have been developed to support those techniques.
2. Some chapters of the texts are particularly important for a firm grasp of the classroom exercises. To encourage reading, an outline of assigned chapters will be included in your assignments. (See below for due dates and chapters.) These reading assignments will account for 15% of your final grade. Failure to complete all of these reading assignments by their due dates will result in no grade for this course.
3. There will be 3 major individual creative projects. These projects must be completed on time to receive full credit. There will be no excuses for missing a deadline. These projects will count for 45% of your final grade. Regardless of other grades received, missing a major project will result in no grade for this course.
4. Additionally, this class will work on the scene painting for the children's show as a group class project.
5. This class relies heavily on the comparison of ideas and solutions between class members. The teaching will be done in a studio environment, for the most part, with the class doing the exercises during class time. It is not possible to have the scene shop open for you to finish your assignments after hours.
For this reason it is very important you attend class. Attendance will be take daily. Participation will count for 20% of your final course grade.
6. In addition to the major creative projects and participation, in-class projects will be frequent. These projects will account for 20% of your final grade.
7. Persons registering for this class S-N must receive a minimum grade of C for an S grade.
8. You must have your own set of scene painting brushes to be able to do the work in this course. Those brushes will include as a minimum:
| 1/4" | scenic fitch lining brush | |
| 1/2" | scenic fitch lining brush | |
| 3/4" | scenic fitch lining brush | |
| 1" | scenic fitch lining brush | |
| 1 1/2" | scenic fitch lining brush | |
| 2" | scenic fitch lining brush |
The brushes are not available in the bookstore. I have arranged for us to purchase them as a group from Norcostco, in Minneapolis, for a significant discount. The price of the 6 brushes is $50.00. You do not have to participate in our group purchase, you do have to have the brushes.
