Brief History of the Women's Studies Discipline at UMM

The first women's studies class at UMM was team-taught during spring quarter 1974; the instructors included: Mimi Frenier, Ellen Robert, Dennis Templeman and Peg Michaels Peterson. The first UMM Women's Studies Major, Carol Dillon, graduated in 1975.

Led by Frenier, UMM's Women's Studies Minor was added to our curriculum fall 1978. Frenier coordinated that minor 1978-1996. Vicky Demos coordinated it 1996-2000.

Beginning spring 1996, a women's studies faculty began the process by which we added a Women's Studies Major to our curriculum. After discussions across campus using all-campus forums, Demos and Frenier formed the Women's Studies Major Proposal Committee. This Committee included Cassie Eidem, Women's Resource Center; Edith Farrell until her death and the Jenny Nellis, Humanities; Dian Lopez, Science and Math; Doug Reese, Education; and Frenier, Social Science, who coordinated this committee.

The major began fall semester 2000 with Pieranna Garavaso as coordinator.
