Instructions for WoSt 4901 Assessment of Student Learning in Women's Studies
The Women's Studies major is an interdisciplinary program in which students learn to approach an issue with different methods and from different points of view. The purpose of requiring this assessment is twofold: 1) it allows the student majoring in Women's Studies to reflect upon and appreciate the connection between the different courses and experiences which constitute the major; 2) it enables the faculty teaching Women's Studies courses to evaluate on a regular basis the Women's Studies program.
To this effect, all Women's Studies majors are required to do the following:
- collect all syllabi and relevant document for a portfolio;
- write a paper reflecting on their experiences;
- present paper and portfolio in front of students and faculty.
To help prepare for this assessment, we have prepared the following guidelines:
By the end of the 1st week:
- Meet with your women's studies advisor.
- Discuss classes you have taken and how to incorporate this material into your portfolio.
By the end of the 5th week:
- Give your advisor a draft of your paper. This paper will explain how you have changed through your Women's Studies major, what you think are the strengths and weaknesses of the program. If possible, give solutions for these weaknesses.
By the end of the 6th week:
- Get your paper back from your advisor and discuss possible changes.
By the end of the 8th week:
- Have a second draft of your paper for your advisor.
By the end of the 9th week:
- Meet with advisor for changes.
By the end of the 12th week:
- Meet with advisor to discuss the panel. Discuss what your presentation will entail.
By the end of the 15th week:
- Give panel discussion with other majors. This date will depend on the best date for all students involved.
These dates are given as a guideline to make sure all students are working on task. Failure to meet these deadlines will result in an incomplete for your assessment of student learning.
