The art history major course requirements include three core courses (Principles of Art, Ancient and Medieval Art, and Renaissance to Modern Art) that survey the history of art through the ages. The curriculum concludes with the "capstone" course, where students reflect on the work they have done in the major. Art history majors will also complete at least two introductory studio art classes. This component offers the chance to understand how art is made and introduces students to some of the creative and technical challenges faced by the artists.

Courses and electives are repeated regularly, and there is typically no requirement to take courses in any given order.

The art history discipline minor offers students the chance to engage in an extensive program of study that can easily be appended to a focus in another major. Six art history courses (three core courses and three electives) fulfill the art history minor requirements.
