Morris elementary education students:
- pursue the study of education and education’s role in society;
- acquire the knowledge and skills to meet the highest standards for excellent in teaching;
- gain extensive experience with children and adolescents in a variety of settings;
- complete a major and teaching licensure program;
- prepare to teach grades K–6 with optional preprimary or middle level endorsements;
- prepare for graduate study in education;
- earn a state of Minnesota teaching licensure.
Opportunities after graduation
Morris's 99 percent pass rate on state-required licensure exams exceeds the state average. Graduates and their employers give Morris uniformly high ratings for preparing new teachers who build learning communities, plan and assess well, and ensure student learning. Our graduates are teaching around the state, the country, and the world. Our graduates can teach all students in all places.
Most elementary education majors seek and obtain teaching jobs. Over the last three years, an average of 75 percent of recent graduates were working in the field of education, most as classroom teachers, during their first year. Those who have chosen to pursue other career options have benefit from the organizational, interpersonal, cross-cultural, and presentation skills developed in the program. Non-educational career choices have included graduate school for counseling and social work, law enforcement, Peace Corps, and human resources.
At some point in their careers, most of Morris's elementary education graduates pursue a master of arts or science. The Morris Office of Career Services is available to help with graduate school decisions. Annually, about 27 percent of Morris graduates use their undergraduate major as a springboard for direct entry into graduate/professional schools.
