Sigma Tau Delta is an international society with chapters at more than 600 colleges and universities. Founded in 1924, the Society is dedicated to both the recognition of academic excellence in the study of English and the promotion of literary appreciation and creative writing. Members are entitled to publish in the Society's journal, The Rectangle, to participate in the annual conference, and to apply for a number of scholarships and internships.
In the autumn of 2003, the University of Minnesota, Morris became host to the Alpha Lamda Xi chapter of the International English Honors Society, Sigma Tau Delta. Initiation into the Society confers academic distinction, but also calls upon the initiate to take an active role in the service of literary study and literacy more broadly across the campus and the Morris community. Activities of the Alpha Lamda Xi chapter have so far included public literary readings by students and faculty, support for a literacy program our local elementary school, and an initiative to get English faculty and students to better know and understand one another.
The Morris organization organizes several activities for members and non-members throughout the year, including a Halloween reading and charitable book drives
