Technology and society are driving changes in our relationship to the planet we call home at a tremendous rate. While we seek solutions to todayâ€™s challenges, some of the most profound challenges of the decades to come cannot be anticipated. Solving the scientific and environmental problems of the future will demand broad-based knowledge, flexible thinking and a passion for wrestling with tough questions.
The Environmental Science discipline at Morris is designed to graduate problem-solvers of the future, professionals who have the tools to answer questions that have yet to be asked.
An interdisciplinary program at heart, the major combines a strong science core with a body of coursework that provides deeper background in a scientific focus, such as geology, biology, or chemistry. In addition, the discipline emphasizes the classic liberal arts approach of exploration, investigation, and analysis. This is an important grounding for tackling the complex and unfamiliar issues that environmental scientists can encounter.
Environmental Science is a vigorous, hands-on major. Students dive in early and take on real-world projects and experiments. Working closely with experienced faculty, students will craft their own projects and follow their interests, taking advantage of the many laboratory facilities and field work resources offered at Morris and through affiliated organizations. Faculty advisors assist students in finding internships, research assignments, and other opportunities to extend their experience. A required policy course that covers how society relates to discoveries and initiatives in Environmental Science further extends the pragmatic reach of the program.
Like the major itself, the work of our faculty is interdisciplinary. Much of the facultyâ€™s research combines different branches of study, and faculty members teach outside the Environmental Science discipline as well. Highly active in their fields, ongoing faculty projects include subjects of current significance to climate, water and energy issues such as glacial geology, alternative energy, and more.
The Environmental Science discipline is distinctive in the combination of solid science, creative thinking, practical training, and range of study. Environmental Science graduates continue on to advanced study or enter the workforce with the tools they need to surmount whatever hurdles lie ahead in their careers.
