Student organizations frequently take the lead in planning historic events and observances at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Recently, the Black Student Union brought acclaimed actor Darryl Van Leer and a screening of "Ruby Bridges" to campus in honor of Black History Month.

"We are trying to increase campus awareness of the black experience in America and the world," said Nate Giles, former vice president of the student organization responsible for bringing Van Leer's esteemed one-man show to campus. The actor's most popular piece, Power on Earth, features his portrayal of eight historic characters, from former slave Nat Turner to former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
