Music Handbook: Facilities

In this section you will find information and policies regarding the various facilities that are available to students here at UMM.

Practice Rooms

Practice is essential for success in any music program, so practice rooms are provided for the sole purpose of practicing your music.

Availability

All practice rooms at the lower level of HFA are open to all UMM students at any time during regular building hours.

Practice rooms are open:

  • 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays
  • Saturdays 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Sundays 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Priority for practice room use will be given in the following order:

  1. Music majors
  2. Non-music majors enrolled in music courses or ensembles
  3. Other non-music majors

Maintenance

Practice rooms and the instruments, equipment and furniture therein are to be kept neat, clean and free of any personal items at all times.

  • Personal items are to be kept in lockers, not in practice rooms or in the public areas (i.e. cushions).
  • If personal belongings are left unattended in a practice room for longer than 10 minutes, any waiting student may claim the practice room for their use.
  • Unattended personal belongings will be turned over to lost and found.
  • No food or drinks are allowed in practice rooms. Water is allowed in closed containers only.
  • Windows in practice rooms are to be left uncovered.
  • Under no circumstances may any items other than sheet music, pencils or metronomes be placed on top of any of the pianos or other permanent practice room instruments.
  • If students find any instruments, equipment or furniture in a practice room in need of repair, they need to immediately report the room number and concerns to a music faculty member.
  • Music stands are NOT to leave the HFA building.

Consequences

Any student found to treat the practice rooms, instruments, equipment or furniture disrespectfully or inappropriately may be revoked the privilege to use these facilities, in addition to being held responsible for the full cost of repairing/replacing any damaged items.

Recital Hall

Students may request time in the Recital Hall for practice through the Recital Hall Reservation Form. The form should be submitted to Makiko Legate in Humanities 104. Please check Recital Hall availability before requesting a time to make sure it is available.

There is a one hour per week time limit for Recital Hall practice.

  • Exceptions may be made for organ students.

Students who are giving recitals should sign up for their dress rehearsal times through the Recital Request Form. They do not need to also fill out the Recital Hall Reservation Form.

  • Students who are signed up for a time have priority over those who are not.
  • No smoking, food, or drink is allowed in the Recital Hall.
  • Water is allowed in covered containers.
  • Music stands are NOT to leave the HFA building.

Instruments

Although most students will provide their own instruments, UMM has a limited amount of instruments available for rent/use to UMM students only, and only for officially approved purposes (i.e. applied lessons and/or use in UMM ensembles). Generally, rental requests from students enrolled in UMM’s large instrumental ensembles and applied lessons take priority over requests from other students.

Rental/use, inventory and maintenance of instruments owned by UMM are supervised by Music discipline faculty.

Fees

The rental/usage fee is $30.00 per semester, and an additional $30.00 to take the instrument home over the summer.

All fees are non-refundable and are used for repair and maintenance costs. The fees are subject to change without notice.

The summer rental fee applies to all instruments, regardless of the exemptions below.

During the regular semester, the following instruments are exempt from the fee, when used in large UMM instrumental ensembles:

  • All percussion instruments
  • Tuba, Euphonium
  • Flugelhorn, Cornet
  • Bass clarinet
  • Bassoon, English horn
  • Soprano saxophone, Baritone Saxophone
  • Bass flute, Alto Flute, Piccolo Flute
  • Piano, Keyboard, Organ, Harpsichord
  • Amplifier
  • Mutes

No instrument will be checked out without payment of fees in advance.

With the exception of the rental fee, all other procedures also apply to mute rentals.

Procedure

No instrument will be checked out without a completed checkout form (including the appropriate faculty signature).

  • All instruments must be returned at the end of each semester or when otherwise requested by UMM music faculty.
  • Holds will be placed on accounts of students who return their instruments after the deadline. In addition, the fee for the next rental period will be added to the students’ accounts.
  • Whether covered under a rental/usage agreement or not, no UMM owned instruments/equipment are ever to leave the UMM campus with the exception of official travel activities by large UMM instrumental ensembles and summer rentals. Any such action will be deemed irresponsible (see below).

Damage

Students renting an instrument are responsible for proper daily maintenance and care for the instrument during the rental period.

  • Students renting an instrument are responsible for the loss of, or any damage to, the instrument during the rental period, other than normal wear.
  • Repair or replacement costs will be charged to the student. Students are urged never to leave instruments unattended in practice rooms or rehearsal rooms and to keep lockers and storage closets locked at all times.
  • If repair/maintenance is needed for an instrument, the student is responsible for immediately notifying the appropriate music faculty member in order to get the necessary approval to obtain repair through Sarlette’s Music.
  • Students found irresponsible in their use of UMM owned instruments will be revoked the privilege to use UMM instruments in addition to having to pay for the damage or other consequences resulting from the irresponsible action.

Lockers

Lockers are available to UMM music students for instrument storage.

The sign-up sheet for lockers is posted in HFA 55.

  • Before signing up for a locker, pick one that is not occupied and that has appropriate space for your instrument. First come, first served!

Students are only allowed to sign up for one locker space. If you have large instruments that require more space, please talk to a music faculty member.

  • Continuing students may keep their lockers over the summer. Please sign up for your locker space as soon as you return to campus on the sign-in sheet.
  • Graduating seniors have until October 1 of the following fall semester to clear out their lockers.
    • After October 1, locks will be cut and any personal possessions left in lockers by students who have already graduated will be taken to lost and found.
  • Students must provide their own locks for their lockers.
  • Lockers are to be kept locked at all times.
    • Failure to comply will be considered encouragement of theft, and may result in the revocation of the privilege to use UMM lockers.

Rehearsal Rooms and Classrooms

The main spaces that music students use for large ensemble rehearsal and classroom work are HFA 170 (Choral Room), HFA 180 (Instrumental Room), HFA 175 (Piano Lab), and HFA 185 (Classroom).

  • There is no food or drink allowed in any of these rooms!
  • Covered water containers are allowed.
  • These are spaces that everyone uses, so please keep them neat!

Areas in the back of the rehearsal rooms are to be kept free of personal belongings, except where permission is given by music faculty.

  • Music stands are NOT to leave the HFA building.
