Music Handbook: Music Scholarships

There are a number of scholarships available to music students, intended to help cover some of the cost of their instruction. Please note the eligibility requirements of each scholarship. For current application deadlines and award amounts, please contact the music discipline. In general, most applications are due in early April.

Clyde Johnson Music Scholarship

Clyde Johnson Music Scholarship
Clyde E. Johnson Music Scholarships honor Clyde Johnson, professor emeritus of music, who served UMM from 1961 until 1999. The scholarships are awarded to talented University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM) music majors to cover completely the fees for one year of weekly private, individual music lessons in the student’s major performance area (instrumental or voice).

Students who plan to enter UMM as music majors and who have demonstrated high music ability and performance should apply for this scholarship. A separate application is necessary: Clyde Johnson Music Scholarship Application. Awards will be given based on the music faculty’s evaluation of a recorded audition submitted by the student and a brief student statement regarding musical background and goals. The application deadline is April 1, 2012. This scholarship is awarded by the Music Discipline.

Edna Murphy Morrison Scholarship Award

Morrison Scholarships
These scholarships are given by Edward and Helen Jane Morrison, longtime residents of Morris, who were instrumental in the establishment of UMM.

The J. C. Morrison Scholarship is given in memory of Ed’s father, owner-publisher of the Morris Sun and the Morris Tribune from 1898 to 1954, to students majoring in English.

The Edna Murphy Morrison Scholarship Award was established by the Morrison family and is an academic scholarship for a music major. The funds will be placed in the recipient's financial aid package.

The Edna Murphy Morrison Scholarship will be awarded according to the following criteria:
  • Music major standing at the 3rd or 4th year level, will be attending UMM the following year;
  • Overall GPA minimum of 3.5;
  • Music GPA of at least 3.5;
  • Outstanding ability in applied music performance or composition.
Students who wish to apply for this scholarship should submit the following materials to the Music Discipline Coordinator:
  • A letter of application for the scholarship award addressing the above criteria;
  • An up-to date transcript;
  • Sample performance programs.
The award will be distributed in 2 equal parts over the two semesters of the following year as part of the recipient’s financial aid package.

Hansen Memorial Scholarship

Hansen Memorial Scholarship
The Hansen Memorial Scholarship Award was established by the family of Daisy Hansen, who taught violin and string methods at UMM and played in the UMM orchestra for many years.

The Hansen Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to two students according to the following criteria:
  • Music major standing;
  • Outstanding academic performance in music courses required for the Music Major, especially the Music Theory and Music History sequences;
  • Outstanding ability in applied music performance or composition;
  • Overall academic excellence, including an overall GPA of at least 3.0.
Students who wish to apply for this scholarship should submit the following materials to the Music Discipline Coordinator:
  • A letter of application for the scholarship award addressing the above criteria;
  • A current transcript;
  • Sample performance programs are suggested, although not required.
The award will be distributed in 2 equal parts over the two semesters of the following year as part of the recipient’s financial aid package. The donors’ intent is that the Scholarship Award will be used to enhance the recipient’s education in Music at UMM.
