University Use LaFave House Policies
The LaFave House living room, dining room, Fireside Room and backyard may be reserved for University functions. The House is available for use between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.
The dining room can comfortably seat up to eight people for a formal luncheon or dinner, or can be set up to serve meals buffet style. The living room can accommodate up to 25 people, depending on your event and set up needs. We have a Yamaha grand piano in the living room that you are welcome to use if you wish. The Fireside Room has been used for retreats, workshops, luncheons, dinners, and presentations. We have the screen and projector for your convenience, as well as a television with both DVD and VHS playing capacities. During the nice weather you are free to use the backyard, the front terrace, and the sun porch. All areas of the house and grounds are available for day and/or evening events.
Your event must be concluded by the agreed upon hour or your budget will be assessed an additional $100.00 per hour or any portion thereof, and an additional $200.00 fee for every hour or portion thereof past 11 p.m.
University groups may reserve space at LaFave House at no cost for a meeting of one hour or less that requires no special set up.
University groups will be assessed a minimum fee based on the following numbers to cover special events costs when gatherings are longer than one hour and special set up arrangements are required:
Groups of 0-25 $25.00
Groups of 26-50 $35.00
Groups of 51-99 $45.00
Groups of 100+ $60.00
The above charges apply to any event of one to four hours or any portion thereof in length. All food and beverage costs are additional and must be arranged by the department hosting the event.
Food served at LaFave House may be catered by the campus food services vendor, Sodexho, or any another licensed caterer. It is your responsibility to contact Sodexho at least two weeks prior to your event regarding your menu selection, or to hire a private caterer. No food may be prepared on the premises, though the kitchen is available for warming, cooling, plating, etc. Food and beverage arrangements must be cleared with the house manager.
If you wish to serve wine or beer, it is up to your department to obtain the license to serve alcohol, which must be filled out and submitted 15 days prior to your event. The Application to Serve Alcohol at an On-Campus Event is available online.
The budget number to which charges will be assessed will be required at the time your reservation is approved if your event is scheduled to last more than one hour and requires a special set up. This will hold your reservation.

Community Event Policy
Room Rental
LaFave House living room, dining room, Fireside Room, and backyard may be rented for special functions. The House is available for use between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. The dining room can be used for formal, sit-down, served luncheons or dinners, and comfortably seats eight guests. The living room can comfortably seat 8-12 people, depending on the event. There have been recitals using the grand piano, and we have had as many as 30 people seated, but it does require a different set up than we normally have in the room.
The Fireside Room overlooks the backyard and is the most popular room in the House. Depending on the set up you request, it can seat as many as 40 people (for bridal and baby showers it can be set up "audience style") and can seat as many as 25 guests for informal meals. This room may also be used for workshops, retreats, board meetings, etc. and if you are having an informal hors d'oeuvres event it can accommodate many guests.
The House and grounds are available for day and/or evening receptions. The deck is complete with furniture, and the sun porch is available and furnished as well.
Rental Fees as of July 1, 2005:
Groups of 1-100 $100.00 for four hours
Groups of 101-150 $150.00 for four hours
Groups of 151-beyond $200.00 for four hours
The rental fee includes all set ups, clean up, coffee, tea, ice water, fresh flowers and clean up. Your event must be concluded by the agreed upon hour or you will be assessed an additional $100.00 per hour or any portion thereof, and an additional $200.00 for every hour or portion thereof past 11 p.m.
Please be advised that you cannot prepare any food on the premises. You may keep it warm or cool, but you cannot do ANY preparations. This includes cutting fresh fruit for fruit bowls, making sandwiches, baking potatoes, etc. Foods must be fully prepared and ready for plating. This follows Minnesota Department of Health and Safety rules.
Any special arrangements and set ups for your event at LaFave House must be agreed upon two weeks prior to your event and will be noted on your confirmation form.
Catering and Food Choices
Food served at LaFave House may be catered by the campus food services vendor or another licensed caterer. If you hire a caterer, it is your responsibility to contact the vendor and make all arrangements. You must let the house manager know in advance of your event what your menu includes, as there are foods and beverages that are not allowed (tacos and red punch as examples).
Alcohol
Wine and beer are the only alcoholic beverages that may be served at LaFave House. We do not allow keg beer, cash bars or mixed drinks. Users must make their own arrangements to bring in or have alcoholic beverages delivered and must make their own arrangements for bartenders. An alcohol release form and proof of insurance must be sent to the house manager two weeks prior to your event. If your homeowners insurance does not extend beyond your own home, insurance may be purchased from UMM at a cost of $69.00. If you are serving alcoholic beverages, nonalcoholic beverages and food MUST be served as well.
Any special arrangements and set ups for your event at LaFave House must be agreed upon two weeks prior to your event and will be noted on your confirmation form.

General LaFave House Policies
• LaFave House may not be used without the house manager or a designated representative present.
• No smoking, strollers or metal backpacks are allowed inside LaFave House.
• Dancing and amplified music are not permitted in LaFave House. The deck and backyard patio area may be used for dancing and amplified sound within reasonable hours.
• The throwing of confetti, rice or litter of any kind is prohibited.Children must be under adult supervision at all times. Please contact the caterer to make special arrangements (i.e. highchairs) for small children.
• Food and beverages will be restricted to the areas where they are served.
• Guests will be restricted to the areas where the event is being held.
• Any object which must be moved will be moved by a staff member only. If the grand piano is moved, you will be required to pay tuning costs.
• Any special use of objects must be approved in advance in writing by the house manager or his/her designee.
•LaFave House staff reserve the right to take appropriate action to enforce these policies.
• At any time that there is an event scheduled in LaFave House or on the grounds, the house manager or the house manager's designee must be present throughout the event.
• Parking is not available on College Avenue during the academic year. You may park in the West parking lot during the hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with a visitor permit. After 5 no permit is required. During the non-academic year parking is available on College Avenue or in the West lot throughout the day, no permit required.
• The University reserves the right to cancel your event when circumstances make it necessary. You will be given sufficient notice to make arrangements elsewhere.

Guest Suite Usage Policy
March 2006
Use of the guest suite at LaFave House is restricted to distinguished campus visitors who are making a significant contribution to the academic life of the whole campus. This list includes:
Distinguished Visiting Professor
Driggs lecturer
Barber lecturer
Convocation speakers
Graduation speakers
Any other use is subject to specific review by the policy committee or at the discretion of the chancellor. In addition, the chancellor may occasionally extend invitations to special guests such as the president of the University of Minnesota, former UMM chancellors and vice chancellors, and regents.
Not included are performing arts artists, faculty search candidates, most Twin Cities staff, visitors, parents, and alumni unless they are on campus for a category listed above.
In the event that there is sponsorship of a speaker by an academic unit of UMM, a minimal charge will be assessed at $25 per day to offset the extra costs of housekeeping services for the time of the guest's stay. A budget number will be required to purchase breakfast items.
