UMM Facts and Figures Guide August 2004
This guide was compiled by the Integrated Marketing Committee as a resource for the campus community. It contains basic facts about UMM and where to find often-quoted statistics that describe UMM's institutional personality. Much of the information is drawn from the UMM Institutional Data Book, a project coordinated by Nancy Helsper, director of institutional research. Please check the most-recently printed data book for statistics. Most offices should have the data book on file. You may also access the data book information on line at www.morris.umn.edu/academic/dblist . Should the statistical information you are seeking not be available in the data book, please feel free to contact Nancy Mooney at helsper@mrs.umn.edu or call 6012. Contact the UMM External Relations Office at 6386 or UMM University Relations at 6050 for printed UMM information sheets or information about programs or history. Campus History Information
The Sisters of Mercy, an order of the Roman Catholic Church, whose mission is to serve the poor and the uneducated established the Morris American Indian Boarding School in 1887. The school was contracted by the federal government to provide vocational training for adolescent youth.
In 1896 the federal government cancelled its contract with the Sisters of Mercy. The campus reopened in 1897 as the Morris Industrial School for American Indians under the management of the federal government.
In 1909 the Morris campus was transferred to the state of Minnesota with the stipulation that American Indian students "shall at all times be admitted to such school free of charge for tuition and on terms of equality with white pupils."
In 1910 the University of Minnesota West Central School of Agriculture and Experiment Station opened to 103 students. After the announcement of the University of Minnesota, Morris opening, new students were not admitted to WCSA. As enrolled students completed their course work, classes were phased out. On March 28, 1963, WCSA held its last graduation ceremony.
The University of Minnesota, Morris opened its doors in 1960.
