DULUTH, Minn. – Two teams that didn’t want their season to end participated in a slugfest Friday afternoon at Wade Stadium as Minnesota-Morris (10-20) outlasted Northland College (10-23) by a 22-20 score, dealing the LumberJacks their second loss of the double-elimination postseason UMAC tournament.

The two teams combined for 44 hits, 16 walks, and nine errors.

Nick Hervin finished 4-for-7 for Morris, collected three RBIs and scored three runs in the win that sends the Cougars into a tournament championship game against top-seeded St. Scholastica (35-6). The Saints defeated Morris 18-0 Friday night that sent the Cougars into the loser’s bracket against Northland.

Heroic in the loss, Chuck Breitenfeldt was a perfect 5-for-5, walked in his sixth at-bat and reached base a seventh time after being hit by a pitch. He doubled in his first two at-bats then followed with three singles. Breitenfeldt had four RBI and scored once.

Each team had seven different players collect at least one RBI in the 3 hour and 30 minute affair.

Both Morris and Northland used only three pitchers apiece despite the hits and runs totals.

Cougar starter Dan Folie (1-0) picked up the win pitching four-plus innings while surrendering 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits, six walks, and one strikeout. Tyler Tollefson pitched the final two innings and picked up the save after allowing only two runs on four hits and a walk.

Starter Andy Finco (2-6) took the loss for Northland after giving up 12 runs – but only five earned – on 12 hits, two walks, and three strikeouts in four innings.

With the win, the Cougars advance to their first ever birth into the UMAC post-season tournament championship against St. Scholasica.
