Cougars blanked in football opener

Northfield, MN- The University of Minnesota-Morris football team was shut out 49-0 by Carleton in the season opener Saturday. Carleton put up double-digit scoring in each of the four quarters (13, 14, 10, 12) to drop UMM to 0-1 on the young season.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Cougars were quarterbacked by Jeff Karschnick (Sr. Windom, MN) who went 12-36 for 127 yards and two interceptions.

UMM’s top rusher was Taylor Johnson (So. Lakeville, MN), who ran for 34 yards on 12 carries. Michael Terrell (Sr. Tracy, CA) also carried the ball six times for 22 yards.

Brady Rose (So. Morgan, MN) led the Cougars’ receiving corps with five catches for 81 yards, while Ryan Stoick (Sr. Morris, MN) added 34 yards on four catches and Jon Koeckeritz (Sr. New Ulm, MN) had one catch for 14 yards.

For the defense, Michael Burrows (Jr. Oakdale, MN) recorded his first sack of the season and only takedown of the game for the Cougars.

Paul Carlson (So. Tracy, MN) led the defense with eight tackles, followed by Blair Elliott (Jr. Forest Lake, MN) with seven and Burrows, Kevin Pope (Sr. Ely, MN), and Nate Copeland (Jr. Minneapolis, MN) each adding six.

The Cougars’ next contest is September 15 at noon vs. Principia College at Cougar Field.
