
MLC hands Cougars UMAC road loss
For Immediate Release: October 17, 2007 New Ulm, MN – Martin Luther College scored 35 unanswered points overcoming a 9-7 deficit in the early going of the second quarter and defeated Minnesota, Morris 42-9 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) football action in New Ulm on Saturday.
The win put the Knights into sole possession of second place in the UMAC North Division.
The Cougars scored the first points points of the game when Taylor Johnson (So. Lakeville, MN) scored from 10 yards out to put UMM on top 6-0. The extra point kick was blocked. The Cougars used just over five minutes (5:19) in the scoring drive to go 79 yards for the touchdown with 3:05 left in the opening quarter.
Martin Luther wasted little time getting on the board on their very next possession, needing just one play to go 65 yards to take a 7-6 lead.
Rick Arterberry (Sr. Alex, OK) put Minnesota, Morris back in front 9-7 with a 26 yard field goal with 10:53 to play in the first half capping an eight play 80 yard drive.
But again the Knights countered quickly. In fact Jacob Schwartz took the ensuing kick-off 86 yards to put MLC in front for good at 14-9.
The Knights added two more scores in the second quarter to build a 27-9 halftime lead and scored twice in the third quarter to make the final 42-9 as neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter.
Martin Luther racked up 479 yards in total offense, the most allowed by the Cougar defense this year, 224 on the ground, the second most allowed.
Taylor Johnson led the Cougars with 123 yards rushing and one TD on 27 carries, the third straight game he has gone over 100 yards rushing and fourth time in six games this season.
The Cougars had 392 yards in total offense, 192 yards on the ground, 200 passing. But for the first time since the season opening loss at Carleton College, the Cougars did not have a single touchdown pass in the game.
Matt Fragodt (Jr. Becker, MN) caught three passes for 67 yards, Brady Rose (So.. Morgan, MN) also caught three balls for 65 yards.
Andrew Shay (Jr. Minneapolis, MN) led the defense with 11 total tackles, 10 solo, four tackles for loss and three sacks.
Brady Janzen (Sr. Mountain Lake, MN), playing in his first game since the season opener at Carleton, recorded his first sack of the year.
Minnesota-Morris (3-3, 3-2 UMAC) will host Crown College this Saturday, October 20th at 1:00 at Big Cat Stadium. Both teams enter the game at 3-2 in the league.
