For Immediate Release: January 15th, 2008 – The University of Minnesota, Morris women’s basketball team held North Central University to just 46 points in a 79-46 win over the Rams in non-conference college women’s basketball action on Saturday January 5th.

North Central scored the games first four points to take a 4-0 lead.

Minnesota-Morris answered with a 16-4 run to take a 16-8 lead following a three-pointer from Marissa Maynard (Sr. Blaine, Minn.) with 11:19 left in the first half.

After a North Central basket made it a 16-10 game, UMM scored eight of the next 10 points to open up a 24-12 lead with 4:40 remaining in the first half after Tynell Kocer (Jr. Pierre, S.D.) three.

The Cougars took a 33-22 lead into the locker room at the half despite shooting just 31.7 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.

In the second half, the Cougars opened up a air of 18 point leads at 46-28 and 49-31.

UMM shot 53 percent (17-32) from the field in the second half and out scored the Rams 46-24 to earn the 33 point win.

For the game Minnesota, Morris was 10-of-19 (52.6%) from three point range and 30-of-73 ( 41 %) overall from the field.

Tynell Kocer led all scorers with 29 points for UMM on 12-18 shooting (66.6 %) from the floor, including 5-7 from three-point range in the game.

Alaina Benson (Sr. Clinton, Minn.) added 19 for the Cougars and a career high nine steals. Kristie Swenstad chipped in a career high 10 points.

The nine steals for Benson was two shy of a UMM single game record. And with the 19 points, Alaina went over the 800 point mark in her career with 805 as she closes in on the 1,000 point mark in her career.

The Cougar defense forced the Rams into 35 turnovers, scoring 19 points off those turnovers UMM had28 steals.

The win upped the Cougar record to 4-5 overall.
