For Immediate Release: January 18th, 2008 Ashland, WI. - A sluggish start and very cold shooting spelled the first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) loss of the season for the University of Minnesota, Morris women’s basketball team on Friday, January 18th in Ashland, Wisconsin as Northland College defeated the Cougars 66-53.
The Cougars field goal shooting was as cold as the artic air out side as UMM was just 20-of-58 (29.4 %) from the floor in the game and just 2-of-12 (16.7) percent from three point range. Minnesota, Morris is shooting 38 percent over from the field and 38 percent (37.7 %) from down town.
Baskets by Tynell Kocer (Jr. Pierre, S.D.) and Arielle Anderson (Sr. Wayzata, Minn.) gave Minnesota, Morris an early 4-0 lead.
Northland College used a 10-2 run to take a 10-6 lead with 13:24 remaining to play in the first half and took a 10 point lead at the break at 34-24.
The Lumberjills would open up a 53-37 lead at 10:10 of the second half, but the Cougars closed the gap to four over the next three minutes to 53-49 after an old fashioned three-point play by Tynell Kocer.
That would be as close as the Cougars would get as Northland would pull away to the 13 point win.
Kocer was the only Cougar in double figures with 20 points and added seven boards. Arielle Anderson had a career high 10 rebounds.
The loss dropped UMM to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
